Professional Experience

UNC Greensboro, Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality, Greensboro, NC
Research Associate, Fall 2009 – Present

I currently serve on a DOE grant-funded project: TRAIN (or “Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusive Networks”) that is studying socially inclusive recreation opportunities (actually, the lack thereof) for persons with disabilities throughout Guilford County, NC. I am a leader for a “parents, families, and advocates” team within the TRAIN project, in which we are networking with individuals within the community to gain first-hand knowledge about recreation opportunities (or again, the lack thereof) for those with disabilities via multiple focus groups. This, alongside research from literature and findings by administrative and programming teams, will be formalized into a report later this year (2010) to make recommendations and [ideally] catalyze change in the practices of recreation-based service providers throughout the region. It will also serve as a platform for future research on a larger scale.

Cville Digital, LLC, Charlottesville, VA
Principal, April 2007 – Present

This is a single-member LLC that currently serves as an umbrella for web hosting services, freelance web development, and the production of various digital products.

Prior to my start of graduate school, the company was primarily focused on real estate photography and commercial authoring of panoramic photography. Secondarily the company focused on web development using WordPress and ExpressionEngine platforms. Clients include, but are not limited to, real estate offices throughout central Virginia, a local physical therapy clinic, various non-profits, and a large political consulting firm.  The company was also granted a US provisional patent for a product design related to automotive seating and the reduction of sitting pressure.

Volunteer Experience

The Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, CO
Spring 2010 – Present

I partnered with the Adaptive Sports Center for a graduate project in an “Advanced Procedures in Therapeutic Recreation” course in the spring of 2010 to assist their development team with grants totaling over $20k for advancement of their adaptive downhill mountain biking program. This led to an in-person trip to Crested Butte for first-hand experience with this incredible sport. Updates to the program and funding decisions will be posted to my blog as appropriate.

Moses Cone Health System, Greensboro, NC
Fall 2009 – Present

My wife is an occupational therapist on the spinal cord injury and general rehabilitation teams in the inpatient rehab unit. Due to this connection I frequently am requested to visit patients to offer peer support and first-hand perspectives on issues related to traumatic injuries. Additionally, I have spent time assisting a certified therapeutic recreation specialist on the unit with related services, including off-site outings for patients facing issues of community reintegration post-injury.

Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, Fishersville, VA
2000 – 2009

I have been a guest speaker for several Occupational Therapy classes from James Madison University, Shenandoah University, and Radford University.  The students receive training in assistive technology, environmental control, and related subjects with therapists at WWRC.  I have formed close relationships with a few of the therapists, due to an injury sustained in 1999, and thus have been contacted to provide peer support with clients and students that spend time at the center.  This has also led to some assistance with Occupational Therapy classes on the James Madison University campus.

Disability Advocacy
2000 – Present

I have participated in several legislative meetings and advocacy events in Washington DC in regards to the promotion of medical research and benefit for individuals who suffer from paralysis.  Additionally, I have served on the accessibility review board at James Madison University, which addressed issues of campus design and operations specifically for persons with mobility impairments.
